22 March, 2024Environment Africa in partnership with Save the Children International are implementing a project titled “children and youth climate resilience in Zambia” which is funded by the Irish Embassy. The project is being implemented in Sinazongwe and Gwembe districts in Southern province. The project is meant to build capacity of children, youth, men and women in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
In this regard, from 26th to 29th February 2024, Environment Africa conducted capacity building trainings in climate change knowledge and participation to the communities in 6 wards. (3 in Sinazongwe namely Maamba, Sinazongwe and Nkandabwe wards) and (3 wards in Gwembe namely Khoma, Bbondo and Fumbo wards). The trainings focused on climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable livelihoods, waste, energy and water management, safeguarding and gender equality. The participants comprised of children, youth, women and men including the Ward Councilors, Ward Development Committee Members, Headmen and Headwomen. 225 (145f/80m|) people were reached out to in Gwembe district and 215 (120f/95m) in Sinazongwe district bringing the total of 440 (265f/175m).
This training was timely in view of the Presidential pronouncement that the Drought is a national disaster. More resilience needs to be built in districts such as Gwembe and Sinazongwe that are very prone to climate hazards and risks.
