1986 — The Journey Begins
Two passionate conservationists — Charlene Hewat and Julie Edwards — embarked on an extraordinary “Save the Rhino” bicycle ride from the United Kingdom through Sub-Saharan Africa. That journey of courage and conviction became the seed of what would grow into one of Africa’s most respected environmental NGOs.
1989 — Environment Africa Founded
Founded as Environment 2000 in Zimbabwe, the organisation evolved into Environment Africa, establishing its Zambia chapter — Environment Africa Zambia (EAZ) — to champion environmental sustainability across the country.
Today — 35+ Years of Impact
EAZ operates through a multi-skilled team implementing the 2024–2028 Strategic Plan across Zambia, partnering with communities, government, and civil society to deliver measurable environmental impact.
A self-sustainable environment that uplifts the living standards of current and future generations in Zambia.
Championing sustainability through inclusive participatory engagement and action across Zambia's communities.
What We Stand ForWe disclose key organisational information openly and hold ourselves accountable to the communities we serve, our donors, and government partners.
Collaboration is central to how EAZ operates — within our multi-skilled team, with community partners, and across civil society networks throughout Zambia.
We build and maintain trust with all stakeholders through consistent, honest communication and the responsible stewardship of resources and communities.
EAZ continuously explores new approaches — from climate-smart agriculture to digital monitoring tools — to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our programmes.
We celebrate the diverse communities, cultures, and knowledge systems of Zambia and ensure our programmes are inclusive, equitable, and rights-based.
Using the Eco-systemic Child Rights Approach, EAZ ensures that children and young people are active participants and beneficiaries in all our environmental programmes.
